Utah Avoids Mandatory Water Cuts
California, Nevada, and Arizona have reached a short-term agreement to reduce their use of water from the Colorado River over the next few years in an effort to curb a rapidly dwindling supply. While Utah is not part of the deal, long-term water management challenges remain as the state continues to face the impacts of climate change and aridification. [Salt Lake Tribune]
Riverton Mayor Announces Bid for Romney’s Senate Seat
Republican Mayor of Riverton Trent Staggs has announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Mitt Romney, who has not announced if he plans to run for reelection. If successful, Staggs would become a contender for one of the most prominent political positions in the state. Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson (R-Kaysville) is also considering the race. UDOT Promises No Resident Displacement in I-15 Widening Project
The Utah Department of Transportation has assured Salt Lake City residents that the planned widening of I-15 will not require any residents to be displaced. UDOT promises to keep the project within the current right-of-way to minimize the impact on local communities, one of the top concerns from opponents of the project. [Salt Lake Tribune]

I bring you grocery-related news today.
Trader Joe’s in Kaysville
The owners of a vacant strip mall in Davis County are looking to attract Trader Joe’s to take over the space previously occupied by Bennion Crafts. The grass-roots campaign is gaining supporters, including Kaysville Mayor Tammy Chan, who is featured in videos on the campaign’s website and social media. Opponents of the campaign say the grocery chain would hurt local grocery stores and increase traffic. The campaign says it needs 100,000 signatures by the end of the month in order for Trader Joe’s to consider opening a store at the proposed location.
Wasatch Cooperative Market Gets its Space
After 14 years of gathering support for a local full-service grocery store, the co-op finally has a home at the “Milk Block,” the new development underway at the old Southeast Market in Liberty Wells. The developer of the site told Building Salt Lake this week of plans to build a mix of retail and live/work spaces, which will include Wasatch Cooperative Market.
