City Cast Salt Lake

The best meet-up places between SLC & Provo

May 11, 2023

Good morning! The team at City Cast Salt Lake has been thinking about (and salivating over) Utah foods. Do you have any Salt Lake recipes to share? Send me an email. Bonus points if you include a quick background story of why you love it.

What's CITY Talking About?

Canyon Toll Roads

The Utah Department of Transportation is planning to implement toll roads in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons by 2025 to address traffic congestion. It could be around $20-$50 per vehicle. Ideally, UDOT would like to see transit made free to encourage people to ditch their vehicles when heading up the canyons to ski or snowboard. For more on canyon congestion, listen to our friendly gondola debate on City Cast Salt Lake. [FOX 13]

St. George Wildfire

A wildfire in St. George has been contained after burning about 40 acres. The fire raged near 100+ homes in a new housing development. Although some chose to self-evacuate, no homes were lost or damaged. [Salt Lake Tribune]

El Niño

El Niño is coming, so what does that mean for Utah? The warm phase coming from the Pacific Ocean affects weather patterns and might mean a shorter, drier monsoon season for us. It can be unpredictable though since we’re caught in the middle of the warmer, drier north and the cooler, wetter south. But typically, Utah sees more precipitation from El Niño in the late fall and winter. [KUER]

How To Concert in SLC

This weekend is the Kilby Block Party, potentially our biggest local music festival. And as we all get ready to lace-up, hydrate, and head down to the Fairpark, City Cast Salt Lake host Ali Vallarta asks head of artist relations for S&S and voice of our theme music Andrea Racine to answer an often raised listener question: What are the ground rules of concert etiquette? Hip and Humble boutique. (@hipandhumble/Instagram)

This week, Hey Salt Lake readers wrote in with suggestions for the best boutiques and where to meet up with a friend halfway between Provo and Salt Lake City:

On the Best Boutiques

“Stilo Stream near 9th & 9th! There are tons of other great options in that area, too, like Hip and Humble or Salt & Honey. They all have cute clothes, fun knick-knacks, and plenty of gift ideas.” - Haley B.

“Hands down Retro Betty in Millcreek and The Art Garden in Murray! Woman-owned and just a great mix of sophisticated to childrens in the Art Garden. Retro Betty is just fun and well, retro.” - Ariane C.

On a Meet-up Spot Between SLC and Provo

“This isn't exactly halfway, but The Cheesecake Factory at Fashion Place Mall works for my sister and me. It is on the south edge of the mall so you don't have to actually go into the mall.” - Tan S.

“Connect on the Jordan River Trail! Take a long walk or bike ride. Find yourself at East Riverfront Park in South Jordan (directly off the trail) and take a short jaunt through the business park to the nearby shopping complex to find a variety of dining options –– sushi, Indian, Mexican, burgers, seafood. Dine in, or better yet, get take out and eat at the park! Great option for families, date night (1st or 100th), or friend meet up!” - Jacqueline L.

“Where to go? Thanksgiving Point!” - Tenille M.

Concert Etiquette for Kilby Block Party and Beyond

The Kilby Block Party hits the Utah State Fairpark this weekend — in a big way. Andrea Racine, head of artist relations at S&S and the voice of our theme music, says they’re expecting 25,000 people at the festival each day. She joins host Ali Vallarta to lay down some ground rules for how to be a good concert goer.

Rock n’ roll 🤘
