Tips to prevent your bike from being stolen

April 27, 2023

Good morning! If you’ve lived here for even a short time, you know that Salt Lake can be lacking in things to do on a Sunday. Tell me, what do you do on a Sunday? Send me an email.

What's DC Talking About

Over 900 Inches of Snow

Even though the Alta Ski Area is closed for the season, that didn’t stop Mother Nature from delivering even more snow. This week, Alta reported over 900 inches of the powdery stuff. If you’re still looking to get out on the slopes, Solitude will remain open through May 21, making it the longest season in resort history (193 days). Be careful out there. Listen to our podcast City Cast Salt Lake for avalanche safety tips. [FOX 13]

Wildfires

While evidently it’s been a wet one, we’ve still had 20 wildfires this year and fire forecasters warn that we should remain on alert. Because of all the moisture, it’s likely that wildfire season will be delayed, but it doesn’t remove all risk. Our weather cycles are now more erratic and therefore harder to predict, but severe summer conditions would mean severe wildfires. [KUER]

Utah Homebuyers

Utah ranks as one of the top 10 most difficult states for first time homebuyers. Are you surprised? On average, $70,000 in cash is needed for a down payment and the median home value is $544,868. As we’ve mentioned here before, Utah lawmakers have passed a program intended to help first time homebuyers buy newly constructed homes. That program begins on July 1 and offers up to a $20,000 loan for eligible residents. The caveat (among other things) is that the house can’t be more than $450,000. [Deseret News]

The Best Salads

We don’t know about you, but we’re absolutely sick of soup. Spring is for crunchy fresh veggies and salads, people! On today’s episode of City Cast Salt Lake, host Ali Vallarta chats with Shireen Ghorbani, a community health director for Intermountain Healthcare, to crown the best local salads. This summer, our team has a goal to get outdoors more. We put a callout for beginner camping recs in the newsletter and asked about the best bike locks on City Cast Salt Lake. Here are some of your suggestions:

🚲 On Bike Theft Prevention

“Unless you tote around that enormous chain lock, you need a ULock, preferably the ones with a $2,500 warranty or something. But with enough time, anyone can get into any lock. Which is why I SWEAR by this alarm system. They are cheap and I run through at least one a season. They arm your bike (I use zip ties to zip the unit on in an inconspicuous place) and when someone so much as touches your bike the alarm goes off.” - Kirsten

“One thing you can do is buy a nifty little air tag holder and an air tag, then you can always know where your bike is at. Other options are a dual lock system, buy one that locks to the bike itself, like a tire to the frame, that way they can’t roll it anywhere (in addition to locking it to the bike stand). Another thing is for some renters insurance, they cover your bike as personal property so look into your insurance policy.” - Brady R.

🏕 On Camp Site Recs

“Christmas Meadows in the Uintas. A small campground with everything you need, from a cold-running trout stream to great hiking trails and amazing views. Drinking water and composting toilets available. The best campsites are #6 and #7 along the river bluff. Bring your fly fishing gear.

Split Rock Ground Campground in the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park. Camp inside a vast cave! The group area for this unique campground is a large, cool, sandy-bottomed cave with a giant fissure running through the ceiling (hence the name). A great spot for scrambling, hiking, and exploring. Fresh water from a spigot is available at the site — a rarity in this part of Utah.

Wedge Overlook in the San Rafael Swell. The best boondock BLM camping in Utah is on the edge of the Little Grand Canyon overlooking the San Rafael River. Eight camping sites (bring your own water, pack out your own poop) sit on the edge of amazing canyons. Rough roads keep out most RVs and trailers. Bring your mountain bikes and dogs can roam free because ... it's BLM land!” - Jason S.

Salt Lake's Sexiest Salads for Spring

There are few people in this world who feel a fiery passion for salads: Michelle Obama, rabbits and our very own Shireen Ghorbani.
